Change Supermicro IPMI Admin Password

Changing default passwords is a vital task – it is never a good idea to leave any system credentials as they come ‘out of the box’. With that in mind I’m changing the password on the IPMI (Intelligent Platform Management Interface) admin account for my two Supermicro SYS-5028D-TN4T servers.

First off I log onto the web console for the IPMI port with an account that has administrative permissions – in this case the built-in admin account.

The menu layout is fairly intuitive, select ‘Configuration’ and then the ‘Users’ menu.

As you can see I have not configured any new accounts – we just have the default ‘Anonymous‘ and ‘ADMIN‘ which come with the system. To modify a user we have to click on the desired account and then the ‘Modify User’ button. You can tell the user is selected by the blue colouring.

The new menu is self explanatory – we need to select the check box next to ‘Change Password’ to make the desired change.

Once ‘Modify’ is clicked a success confirmation prompt should pop up.

I know Supermicro have various other utilities which can also be used to manage the IPMI settings but for this post I’m just covering the quick steps as I only have two devices – obviously in an environment with many Supermicro systems you would want to either script this via their command line tools or through one of the applications they have for enterprise management.
