Greenshot Screen Capture Tool

If you’ve seen previous posts on my website you will no doubt be familiar with the common use of white boxes in screenshots to obfuscate information taken from production systems. Most of my articles are written based on my work meaning the screenshots have sensitive data in them which I want to hide. It’s only recently I’ve really bothered to look for a better tool when it comes to taking screenshots and then editing them and I think I’ve found a great one.

Greenshot is a fantastic little tool and I am so glad I found it – so much so I felt it was worth writing about to try and spread the word. You can learn more at their website – http://getgreenshot.org/

I’ve taken the liberty of providing some of the key points they identify below –

  • Quickly create screenshots of a selected region, window or fullscreen; you can even capture complete (scrolling) web pages from Internet Explorer
  • Easily annotate, highlight or obfuscate parts of the screenshot
  • Export the screenshot in various ways: save to file, send to printer, copy to clipboard, attach to e-mail, send Office programs or upload to photo sites like Flickr or Picasa, and others

Once downloaded and installed you can configure an array of options, I’ve provided some examples of the settings available –

Along with the keyboard shortcuts you get a notification area icon which provides access to various options –

The region selection option is great with a nice ‘target’ icon that gives you a zoomed view to help accurately select an area and once you have a screenshot you are presented with a menu of options dependent on your installation preferences of course.

The image editor is great – it’s cut down to just what I need with a very easy to use obfuscation tool that makes screenshot editing quick and easy and removes those white boxes that to be honest I hate in favour of a blur which to me is much nicer and doesn’t pull your attention.

Of course there are many options and functions in this software I haven’t covered but so far I’m really happy with it and would strongly recommend to anyone else looking for a better option than the Windows snipping tools that exist.
